Teeth Whitening: What Actually Works (and What Doesn't)

From charcoal pastes to LED kits, whitening advice is everywhere. Here's what's genuinely effective — and what to skip.

Whitening advice is everywhere — in your feed, on the shelf, in every other ad — and a lot of it is noise. Some of it even risks damaging your teeth. Let's separate what genuinely brightens your smile from what just spends your money, and do it with a bit of calm honesty.

First, why teeth discolour

There are two kinds of staining. Extrinsic stains sit on the surface and come from coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries, and smoking. Intrinsic stains live deeper within the tooth and can come from certain medications, ageing, or an old injury. This matters, because surface stains respond well to most whitening, while deeper discolouration needs professional treatment — or sometimes a different solution altogether, like veneers.

What actually works

  • Professional in-office whitening — the fastest, most dramatic, and most even results, done under supervision.
  • Custom take-home trays with dentist-grade gel — slower, but excellent and comfortable, moulded precisely to your teeth.
  • Whitening toothpaste — modest, gradual help with surface stains and good for maintenance.
  • Cutting back on staining culprits, or sipping them through a straw and rinsing afterward.

What to be careful with

  • Charcoal pastes — abrasive enough to wear enamel, and thin on real evidence.
  • One-size-fits-all boil-and-bite kits — the trays leak gel onto your gums and irritate them.
  • DIY 'natural' hacks with lemon, vinegar, or baking soda — the acid erodes enamel, which ironically makes teeth look duller and yellower over time.
  • Salon or mall whitening from non-dental providers, where no one checks whether your teeth are healthy enough first.

What about sensitivity?

Some sensitivity during whitening is normal and usually temporary. The difference with professional whitening is control — we assess your teeth first, protect your gums, and adjust the strength and timing to keep you comfortable. Store-bought kits offer none of that, which is why they're the most common cause of the whitening horror stories people share.

Keeping your results

Whitening isn't permanent, but good habits make it last. Rinse or sip water after staining drinks, keep up gentle brushing, and use occasional top-up trays. With a little care, a professional result can stay bright for a year or more.

The bottom line

The safest, most reliable path is whitening that's checked and tailored to you. That's exactly why we start by making sure your teeth and gums are healthy, then choose the gentlest approach that gets you the result you want.
