The Truth About Root Canals

Root canals have a scary reputation they simply don't deserve. Let's clear up the myth with a little calm honesty.

Few treatments are as misunderstood — or as unfairly feared — as the root canal. If the phrase alone makes you wince, this one's for you. The reality is far gentler and far more reassuring than the reputation, and understanding it tends to melt the fear away.

The myth

The old story says root canals are excruciating. That idea is decades out of date. It comes from a time before modern anaesthetics and gentle techniques, and it's been kept alive by jokes and hearsay ever since. In truth, surveys of people who've actually had one usually find it was no worse than getting a filling.

What's really going on

Inside every tooth is a soft core called the pulp, made of nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack, or an injury lets bacteria reach the pulp, it becomes infected — and that is what causes the severe toothache people dread. A root canal treats that infection. In other words, the procedure relieves the pain; it doesn't cause it.

Why saving the tooth matters

You might wonder whether it's simpler to just pull the tooth. Usually it isn't. Keeping your natural tooth preserves your normal bite, keeps neighbouring teeth from drifting, and avoids the cost and effort of replacing it later with a bridge or implant. Nothing works quite as well as the tooth you were born with, so saving it is almost always the healthier long-term choice.

What actually happens during treatment

  • We gently numb the area completely, so you're comfortable throughout.
  • A small opening is made to reach the infected pulp inside the tooth.
  • The infection is carefully removed and the space is cleaned.
  • The canal is sealed to prevent bacteria from returning.
  • A crown is usually placed to restore full strength and protect the tooth.

Recovery is easier than expected

Most people return to their normal routine within a day or two, with only mild tenderness that responds well to over-the-counter pain relief. And the relief from the original toothache is usually immediate and profound.

If you're still nervous

That's completely understandable, and it's exactly why we take our time, explain each step, and offer sedation for anyone who'd like extra calm. You're always in control, with a pause signal ready whenever you need it.

The bottom line: a root canal ends pain and saves your tooth. Not so scary after all — and if you're dealing with a toothache right now, please don't wait it out. The sooner we see you, the simpler it stays.
